Wrong aspect ratio

I've come across what seems to be a bit of an oddity with some recent recordings.

Star Trek: Voyager is currently showing on the Horror channel on UK Freeview, and being relatively old has a 4:3 aspect ratio. If I use VRD 6 to cut the adverts out and save directly as a .ts, everything is fine. If I choose to output as a .mkv the video becomes 16:9 unless I manually edit the profile and change it to 4:3.

Bug, or something to do with the container format?

Looks like it's being detected by VRD as 16:9. It's possible the aspect changes somewhere after the start of the video. TS can handle a change like that, MKV can not. The easiest fix is to just set the profile to 4:3 so that it sets the MKV container correctly.

Thanks Dan. The aspect ratio is 16:9 during the advert breaks, but the bulk of the recording is 4:3. If it's looking right at the start of the recording to determine the aspect ratio for MKV that might explain it as the original Star Trek is on right before and that's 16:9, and I do use a bit of padding either side to make sure I don't miss anything.

I had a problem like that...
The start of the video was black, but that black was a different aspect ratio and you could not see that it was.

Yeah we can't really account for that. We have code in QSF to strip out frames with a different resolution or frame rate, but not aspect.

If the ads in your video have a different dimension then you can filter them using QSF by checking "enable filters". In Version 5 and earlier you would have received a warning about dimension changes, but in V6 we allow videos with multiple dimensions to be edited.
