Version 5 vs 4 compression:

I record a lot of satellite MPEG4 transport streams. There is a way to do that. Now when I edit a 2 hr movie file down to cut off the recorded heads and tails on Redo4 I get a file size of 11GB which is about right considering the size of the source file. When I make the same edit on Redo5, I get 2GB. What is Redo 5 doing? I don't care about file size as I want the highest quality possible.

It seems that Redo5 is re-compressing the data. Is that true?

There are "Default" options built into a VRD Profile.

"Profile Options">"Advanced Options". The Options change per "Encoding type".

Change the Default options to suit your needs.

Are you selecting the MPEG-4 profile? Because MPEG-4 is not the right profile.

The MPEG-4 spec has two video codecs in it. Part 2 and part 10. The "MPEG-4" that your satellite is using is most likely part 10, also know as H.264 or AVC. So you want to pick the H.264 profile in VideoReDo not the MPEG-4 profile.

In v6 we've removed the MPEG-4 profile because it was confusing people and no one really uses that format any more anyway. But in v5 it's still there so you'll need to make sure to use the right one.

I have a "Edit Profiles list...." under the tols tab.

A menu comes up with many options, all checked. The Restore to Default is blanked out.

I want to simply edit the transport stream to cut unwanted footage and not have any modifications to bit edited bit stream other than the cuts.

There should be a profile called "H.264 Transport Stream". When saving pick that from the filter list at the bottom of the save dialog.
