Odd joiner anomaly

I was editing Grimm (broadcast locally in 720p), and I noticed there was virtually no "breathing space" between program segments. So I found a "blank" 30 frame GOP, made a cut from i-frame to the next i-frame, and added several iterations of it to the joiner and spaced them between segments of the TV show.

When I played back the show the first two segments seemed to cut off early. I re-saved--this time without using the joiner. That file turned out to be 13 seconds longer than the joined one. And neither matched up with output or joiner lengths. The output listed 42:14, the finished file made without the joiner 42:38 and it looked fine, with the exception of each segment basically shotgunning from the previous one. The joiner listed 42:26, the finished file made with the joiner 42:25, with a couple seconds cut off at the end of each segment.

I've been using VRD for many years and this has never happened before. (I've also never capped a show off this station. Coincidence?) I'm baffled, and curious if you have a name for this. Thanks.

I would call it strange, however, manipulating short 1 or 2 GOP segments can be problematic since they are so short.

Try this method to see if you get the results you desire.
Here is a procedure to add black sections between segments of your video:
Set the desired duration for the titles. Click on the menu: Tools>Options>Titling
You may find this process easier in Scene Mode where you only select the segment you wish to output. Tools>Options>General Parameters and select "Scene Mode" for Editing Mode.
Mark the first segment you would like for the output video. This segment will be green with the rest of the timeline red. Add to the Joiner. Joiner>Add Current Project to Joiner List
Clear the cutlist and select the next segment of the file you wish to add. This new segment will be green with the rest of the timeline red. Add to the Joiner. Joiner>Add Current Project to Joiner List
Continue to add segments of the timeline and add to the Joiner. Clear the cut list each time and indicating the next sequential segment.
When you have added all of the segments to the Joiner, click on the menu: Joiner>Edit Joiner List
Click the "Add Title" button and click OK on the new window that appears to set the black segment.
Continue to add titles as above for the number of black segments you wish to have.
Highlight each of the titles and use the up and down buttons to place the blank title between 2 segments of the video.
To output your file click the "Create video from joiner list" button in the Joiner.
