New Save dialog

V6 is nice upgrade, thank you - but the new "Save dialog" drives me crazy. Can you please give us the option to change it to the old one?

I would like to do this (like in v5):

1. Hit Ctrl+S
2. Start writing new filename without clicking on any button or selecting anything
3. Hit Enter
4. The End :)

The old file dialog no longer works. Windows limits it too much for us to add compatibility with new profile system. (favorites, grouping, sorting, etc...) I considered adding full navigation to the dialog just like the save dialog, but duplicating all the functionality of a normal save dialog, which is basically a mini explorer window, was impossible.

Do you normally change the location of where the file is saved? Or just the name? I might be able to make it so the file name is highlighted as soon as the dialog opens so that typing would overwrite it. Or maybe add a keyboard shortcut to pop up the file location dialog.

@Dan203
I always change the location when I'm processing a bunch of file as to date or dvd source.
I did not worry with the QSF.mpg name as when I save I click on one of the previous files
and make the minor changes necessary.

--------------That is the very important bit. Having the saved files listed to reference from when saving a new one.
I can see where I am what I've done so far and I can select a file name the closest to the new name I want.

QUOTE---"Or maybe add a keyboard shortcut to pop up the file location dialog."
-------IF this means a list of the files I've been saving then Great,Wonderful! Please do!

VRD6... A lot more clicking.
I was saving off dvd.mpg files with VRD6 and stopped in the middle as it was just too much and went
back to using VRD5.
I'll use VRD6 for it's specialized uses...
X264, transitions and "deinterlacing 3:2 pulldown mpg files">(Thanks again so much for this)
but not normal editing.
Not user friendly (yet).

Thanks,
jmc

It would be great to split directory and filename to 2 lines, and separate extension as well, something like this:

That would be great, if it is not possible to show the opened previous location to see the work and copy parts of previous filenames (like the old one). When directory and filenames are not in one line it would easier to manage much batch files that contain identical part of the name. I am also not a friend of the new dialog; too much clicking.
I think the extension is not the problem; it should be added automatically.
Perhaps you can find a way to make it a bit more comfortable.

Otherwise VRD6 is quite well done as far as I can tell. There might be some minor details, but I thing they will be gone quickly.

I'm working on a small change for the next release that I think will make this a bit better. We're not completely changing the dialog, but adding some small improvements which I think will make it a few less clicks.

i like the idea of separating folder and file name but whilst you're looking at it...
My normal work pattern is to open and edit a video file, save the edits in a project file and then submit the edited file into the Batch Manager using the project name as the oputput file name. I do this by entering the required file name when saving the project file, copying it and pasting it into the output file name dialogue box.
I do this because I can have one file with up to 8 different recordings - the source file therefore has a generic name.
It would save just a little bit of time if the default output file name was the project name if one had been allocated. This could be an option in the Options/ General Parameters section.

2. New: On the file save dialog, the save button has a drop-down button to split scenes. This is in addition to the split scene option that's already on the advanced options of the output profile. Hopefully this will make discovery of this feature easier.
3. New: Tools>Options>General>On save auto show 'Select file'. Some V5 users have mentioned that they don't like the extra mouse clicks in the file save dialog. Selecting this option will save a mouse click or two when saving yet still preserve the enhanced output functionality of V6.
Thank you, but now it's even worse! :D

Now it should be like this:
1. Hit Ctrl+S
2. Start writing new filename
3. Hit Enter and Enter again
4. The End

BUT instead of that it looks like this:
1. Hit Ctrl+S
2. Start writing new filename
3. Hit Enter
4. And because another Enter only roll up the new menu with "split scenes", I need to CLICK on save button, because ENTER doesn't work at all :(
5. The End

And Save button is also broken, or missing should I say, when I'm "TABing" through the active elements on new Save dialog :(

So please fix this, thank you.

Hi Dan - I have the same issue - can we have an option to always save to a specific folder as default? Maybe one of the favorites?

Which issue is that, there have been a number of issues reported in this thread?

It would be great if there was a possibility on saving video to be asked only about output file location (i.e. no Save dialog, only Select file dialog). With the default video profile being used. I never change a file extension or anything else, just pick a file name, and I'm sure it's not only me.

It could be an option in settings or a separate button like 'Save Default' or 'Save as Source'. It would make UX feel the same as in V5 for me and others.

Are you using the Tools>Options>General option "On save, auto open 'Select file'"? That will get you to within 1 mouse click of V5.

Yes, but I still have to press Select and then Save, instead of just Save. And honestly, two popup dialogs appearing simultaneously - this is not very elegant.

OK, I understand we can take another look at it in future build, but I wouldn't expect a near term change.

Not sure whether this is already covered: does V6 have an easy way to automatically direct output saves back to the source or project directory, e.g. in the profile, or a global option, or in the Save dialog etc. ?

As with previous versions, the default behavior is to default the output directory to one used in the previous save. Alternatively, you can override the default output folder on a profile by profile basis.

I different issue, but related to the same Save dialog box...

Can you set the "Save" button as the default button as it was previously please?

I am used to pressing Control-S to open this dialog, then hitting Enter to save the file with the name and directory already selected.
Now, I have to tab to the Save button or grab the mouse.

Something small, but I would appreciate adding this to the list of changes please.

(Double) ENTER works even when the default active element is filename box, what are you talking about? Do you have the latest beta version?

Yeah there was an issue with this when we initially added the little drop down menu, but I fixed it in a more recent reversion.

Often I have to search the computer, to find where the output file went.
In both V5 and V6, that behaviour has been driving me up the wall.
While I might occasionally want to choose a destination for "Save", I wish I could default it to go to my source file's project folder like the .prj file does.

(EDIT: I've just discovered release build 816a, maybe the problem was fixed?)
(EDIT: Spoke too soon, I was mistaken. In 816a the default save can still end up in funny places like Windows Document library (???).
Instead It should, like the .prj file, default to the project folder I've created to accommodate the source file, the .prj file, and various other intermediate files.

Please?
