Navigation key modifiers not working

Shift and Control keys are not affecting the UP and DOWN cursor keys except to prevent them working at all. In addition, they are working in reverse, i.e. down key is supposed to be forward 3secs, but it's backwards 3secs and vice versa. I tried to battle on, and yes I realise this is a beta, but the keyboard navigation is completely screwy and seems to be unstable. Please fix it so it's normal, i.e. the same as v3, v4, & v5. I can't continue for now because I can't edit the way I do in all those previous versions. I have checked that all the v6 Navigation options are the same as I have set in the previous versions.

They work exactly the same in v5. Shift+Up and Ctrl+Up do nothing. Those modifiers only effect Left/Right, not Up/Down.

That being said in v6 you can add a custom key that will do what you want. Just go to Tools->Options->Keyboard shortcuts. You can modify the shortcuts for for Forward/Back 1x-3x.

You mention other issues with keyboard navigation. Is there something else specific that is not working? The keyboard navigation was completely rewritten in v6 for the ability to do custom shortcuts so if there is a bug we'd like to hear about it.

That is not correct. In v3, 4 & 5 the Up and Down CURSOR keys ARE modified by the Shift and Control keys. Note that I am talking about the actual cursor keys, NOT the 2, 4, 6 & 8 keys in the numpad. I REALLY want that functionality restored as I have been using the UP and DOWN cursor keys since v3 and need to keep doing so. Please check the old versions, I need it restored PLEASE!

UP/DOWN: 3 secs
Control UP/DOWN: 30 secs
Shift UP/DOWN: 2 mins
Ctrl+Shift UP/DOWN: 10 secs

You will note the difference is that unshifted the jump is 3 secs instead of 1 frame for the LEFT/RIGHT cursor keys.

I'll keep an eye on the instability issue, but it was probably just me trying to cope with the loss of shift/control + up/down functionality and the reversed operation plus the insert key madness. The keys I've been using for many years ALL just gone wrong <sob>. But I'll be the first to let you know if it's not normal.

Hmmm... in debug it did nothing, but in release you're right it does do something. Not sure what to do about that. Those modifiers are kinda special, and not part of this code, which is why left/right are still hard coded and not assignable. I'll have to look at the code and see what our options are.

We will revisit this, but in the meantime, you can define your own hot keys for U/Down, Ctrl UP/DN, Shift Up/Dn, etc. by selecting the action go to timecode and entering a value such as +30s or -30s.

Sorry about this oversight of mine, but I just remembered that the BIG difference between using the UP/DOWN keys with shift and control is that playback does not stop like it does with the LEFT/RIGHT keys. That is much, much better IMO, and (at least for me) it makes editing a lot faster when the playback continues as you search for endings and beginnings. Much faster. The reason for this is that you don't lose your audio clues like you do when the playback just stops. Program and ads sound very different and you instantly know when you've crossed into different content. Then it is easy to back up unshifted (3 secs) and play out to the change. It cuts out a lot of extra key-presses.

Just tried creating a custom hot key ctrl+Up and set it to "go to time code" with a value of +10s. This appears to do what you want. Jumps forward 10 seconds and continues playing. We discussed this issue here last night and are still not 100% sure how we care going to implement things. The old V2-V5 method of hard coding keyboard shortcuts doesn't always translate well to the new V6 of letting users build their own shortcut maps.

Yes, that works, congratulations. In fact, the idea of allowing users to customise the UI is brilliant and a positive step. However, I can't complain about the built in help - there isn't any! The help files in v5 did not keep up with changes made along the way, so I hope that your team will get v6 fully documented and kept up to date which should also take some pressure off the online support.

What we've decided is that we will default up/down, page up/page down to operate like in V5, but if you want to overwrite them you can do it by creating custom hot key entries.

Update: Same will apply to left/right keys. They will default to the values on the Tools>Options>Navigation but you'll be able to totally customize them on the Tools>Options>Hotkeys screen.

OK, good decision, that will make the versions more consistent and should be a better experience for users upgrading from v3, 4 & 5. V6 is shaping up to be user-friendly.

BTW, when I said above "...there isn't any...", I was referring specifically to the error message that appears when you select "help" in the custom hot key editor. I was pleasantly surprised when "m" was actually the correct abbreviation for "minute/s".
