From the Welcome thread:

5) An Intel QickSync encoder for faster encoding on SandyBridge and later Intel chips. To check for QuickSync support, go to Tools>Options>Intel Quick Sync and click "QuickSync information". (Note: Intel does not support QuickSync on Windows XP.)
You may want to clarify this as being on some of those CPUs. I have a 3930K Sandy Bridge-E CPU and QuickSync is not supported since it doesn't have Intel HD graphics.

You're correct, we need to do a little bit of additional work to disable options on systems that don't support Intel Quick Synv. BTW, what results do you get from QuickSync Information?

As mentioned in my 'First Impressions' thread, I got the same result as SamuriHL and had to enable QS manually in the profiles I use but once I did, it made a significant difference (i5-4670K CPU).

Yes, I think you're good to go! However, I've not seen a situation where Hardware is supported and software is "Unsupported". This would tend to imply a missing DLL.

Can you give QuickSync a try and let me know what happens?

Seems to be working. I'll update the post when it's done with the log. I would have expected it to be a bit quicker, though. I'm doing a TiVo file with no cuts (just as a test of the conversion engine) to MKV h.264. I set the encoder to QS. It's taking about 20 minutes for an hour and 2 minutes of video. Like I said, I'll update this post with the log in about 15 minutes or so when it finishes.

How about doing a software encode to compare the speed difference. We've found that on fast CPUs, the QS H.264 technology isn't all that much faster than the software encoder although by off-loading work to the GPU you can do more things with your computer while the system is encoding.

Don't know if you do MPEG2 reencodes (like DVDs), but the QS technology really screams for MPEG2 encoding.

This machine is ridiculously fast anyway. For fun I'm reencoding with the default encoder now for comparison. The quality of the encode is damn sweet. I was honestly quite shocked at how good it came out. I seriously doubt anyone could tell the reencoded version from the original. It's that good.

I've used QS on my HTPC before to do blu-ray encodes to files I can play on my tablet. Typically 7 minutes. :D I've not done a lot mpeg2 encoding with it, though. But if the quality is this good I may reconsider and start using it when I cut commercials from my TiVo recordings. It seems to save quite a bit of space. It's still calculating the encode time for this one so I'll post back in a bit when it's done for comparison with QS.

EDIT: Yea, 40 minutes for the software encode so there's quite a big difference in speed.

Machine specs: Core i7 4800MQ, 32 gigs of DDR3 ram, 880m nVidia with 8 gigs, 384 gigs of SSD raid0, and 1 tb of 7200 rpm hdd. It's no slouch in the kitchen. :D

It took significantly longer than QS and IMO the quality of the output wasn't as good which really surprised me.

P.S. The output from the software encoder was bigger as you can see in the logs. Honestly, I'm a QS convert if this is going to be the typical case. :)

Software encoder only looks slightly larger, 7.38 vs 7.80. There are settings to almost double the speed of the software encoder with some sacrifice in quality. If you're happy with the results I say stick with QS :)

Yea, I'm not sacrificing quality given that I get a smaller file and in less than half the time with QS. :) Works for me!

I think you'll find that 'Hardware supported' - Software Unsuported' is quite common.
That's what I have - see below - CPU is i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz with HD 4000 Graphics ONLY.
The relevant Software dll has not been installed on my machine

Using Tools>Options>Intel QuickSync - the first screen gives :-
1. Implementation setting: Hardware (any device)

Quick Sync Information gives:-
- Auto : 1.8 , Hardware via 'D3D9'
- Software : 0.0 , Unsupported
- Hardware : 1.8 , Hardware via 'D3D9'
- Auto Any : 1.8 , Hardware via 'D3D9'
- Hardware Any: 1.8 , Hardware via 'D3D9'
- Hardware 2 : 0.0 , Unsupported
- Hardware 3 : 0.0 , Unsupported
- Hardware 4 : 0.0 , Unsupported

QuickSync (Hardware encode) working

Yes, I think you're good to go! However, I've not seen a situation where Hardware is supported and software is "Unsupported". This would tend to imply a missing DLL.
I'm seeing similar here (i5-4670K @ 4GHz with internal HD4600) but with one difference (Hardware 2):

- Auto : 1.10 , Hardware via 'D3D9'
- Software : 0.0 , Unsupported
- Hardware : 1.10 , Hardware via 'D3D9'
- Auto Any : 1.10 , Hardware via 'D3D9'
- Hardware Any: 1.10 , Hardware via 'D3D9'
- Hardware 2 : 1.10 , Hardware 2 via 'D3D9'
- Hardware 3 : 0.0 , Unsupported

and QuickSync is working here.

Dan & Simon, I'm curious now. Did you install the Intel driver or did it come pre-installed on your system(s)? When I installed my Intel graphics driver, it installed the hardware drivers as well as the software drivers. The software drivers are in the folder: C:\Program Files\Intel\Media SDK.

I'll have to ask Intel support about it.

I can confirm hardware support only with drivers installed directly from Intel.
