How to preserve subtitles

I have an MKV file (H264/AC3) from which I cut a few scenes. When I saved the edited video, it finished quickly (no transcoding required), but I have lost the 3 subtitle streams that were in the source.

I'm no expert so there's probably an oversight on my part What am I doing wrong? I didn't see any options to remove/retain subtitles.

I believe VRD is subtitle pass through at best and only SOME file types will keep subtitles.

H264.mp4 files will keep Closed Caption "subtitles"=(txt) but I've yet to find a player except VRD that wil
display the CC in them.

If you can extract the subtitles you can then put the subtitles into the MKV container with MKVmerge.

Yeah we don't support the subtitle types in MKV files. (SRT or DVD) We only support CCs, teletext and DVB subs and those are only compatible with certain formats.

Not initially. Adding a subtitle format is difficult for us. The way they pass through the program we have to know how to decode them as well. Basically the way VRD works with everything, audio, video and subs, is that we demux the file into elementary streams which then get fed to various portions of the code for display, output, etc... For us to demux a stream we have to write a whole parser for that specific format. We actually have partial support for DVD subs in the program we started working on a long time ago, so finishing that up probably wouldn't be that much work. Adding SRT though would be starting from scratch, which is a lot of work. Maybe once v6 is out and we've taken care of most of the bugs we'll start looking at new features like this.
