HD processing to X264.MP4, different bottleneck then SD..Where?

X264.MP4 processing HD.AVI (all iframes) (71 Mbps) has different bottleneck then
processing SD.

With SD (Standard dvd MPG level file) to X264.MP4 a L2 preset (240 fps) is twice the fps of a L3 preset (120 fps).

With HD.AVI (all iframes 71 Mbps) there is almost no difference... both high 50s fps.

The file is coming off a one GB per second SSD type storage device so that can not be the bottleneck.

I imagine it is some single threaded process limitation and there is nothing to do about it.
Just wanted to check and make sure because the cpu use is also HALF that of SD compression.

So not a cpu limitation or storage speed limitation.

EDIT...
just realized it is not as bad I thought, at about half cpu use I can get back to
two encodings at once again!. Instead of 50s fps I'll be doing 100 fps.

I assume the HD.AVI is some codec other then MPEG-2 or H.264? If so then that's likely the bottle neck. We use ffmpeg to decode all other formats and it can be pretty slow with some formats. Some don't even decode fast enough to play properly in the UI.

Yep... lossless.
Had not given any thought to codec... X264,H264 and MPG is all I usually deal with.

So I have 50 GB/Hour files.
Compress x264 afterwards at only 57 fps. ouch.
(two encodes at once gets me 88fps total, the cpu stays 90%)
