FYI - x265 version 1.3x

Assume the current version uses x265 v. 1.2.2. Nothing wrong with that.
V. 1.3.x has rececently been released, and some changes under the hood, and street tests suggest nominally 35% bigger renders.
It seems many on the street are happier just setting AQ=1 as the default.

Thanks for that.

Preset SLOWER
Roughly...
4k @ 25Hr per Hr of video.
720p @ 8Hr per Hr of video.

Wow, I thought I tried for best quality. I'm not at this level... Thank goodness! :)

Hmm, can VRD even take command line input or that would be all in the Profile?

Probably not for now.

TBH, my production sweet spot is VeryFast. Has been for years. Hobbyists, otoh, may want slower, larger files.

We don't use the CLI version. We use the library version which is commanded via functions and variables which can be very different than the command line. For example one command line option might set several different variables. So trying to duplicate the exe build's command line options to VRD is not something we ever plan to do. We might add some more advanced options that fit our profile system, but there will never just be a "x264 command line" option.

A lot of the freeware/shareware type programs that just recode offer that option because they're really just a GUI shell that is calling the command line exe. That's not how VRD works. We have an official license to build x264 and x265 right into our source code.
