Fast AVI to MPEG converter

I'm new to VRD. I just installed VRD Plus 2.2.1.445-Jan 8, 2006. So far, I like it a lot. The UI is terrific and it works very well on TiVo (VOB) files, but it does not handle the AVI files from my Casio Elixim camera. It says, "AVI files are not yet supported," which gives me some hope that they will be supported eventually, but I'd like to find a good solution now. I searched the web for AVI-MPEG converters and, of course, there are a million of them out there. I tried one and it was pitifully slow -- took about a minute to convert a minute of video. Unacceptable! I'm hoping someone in this forum can recommend a fast converter, so I don't have to waste lots of time trying various packages. Btw, I tried to search the forum for AVI, but it said the word was "either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search." So I apologize if this has been discussed before, but I didn't have much luck searching the forum's posts. Thanks, Joe

Joe, the term "AVI" means only a container and doesn't really say anything about the output format of the Casio--while someone here might know it or research it for you, you might do better to ask at a site where the Casio is discussed.

In any case, converting from one video format to another will always take time--I don't think a 1:1 ratio is too bad myself! Other conversions I've done take 2x and 3x sometimes to do.

yes, we've discussed that

In this section of the forum, scroll down a few lines to this discussion for some interesting ideas.
We talked about several different converters.

Each situation is different, but I've achieved around 3x to 4x conversion speed (90 to 120 frames per second).

The format is MPEG-4. I hear what you're saying about AVI being a contatiner, but VRD seems to know it's AVI. I even changed the file extension from .AVI to .MPG, and when I loaded it from VRD as a .MPG file, VRD still says, ""AVI files are not yet supported." In any case, given that the camera says it's an MPEG-4, do you have any suggestions for converting that? Thanks, Joe

Why are you converting it - do you actually want your mpeg4 to be converted to mpeg2, or do you just want to edit it? (ie is your mpeg4 from your camera, destined to be authored to DVD)

Lester, yes, I just want to edit it (very pleased with VRD for that) and then burn it to DVD (very pleased with Nero for that). Thanks, Joe

Anole, thanks for the link to that thread. I'll take a look at it. Regards, Joe
