Encode AC3 5.1 audio?

The license for 5.1 AC3 is expensive and the certification process is convoluted. But on the plus side the patents protecting AC3 5.1 expire next year and once that happens we'll be able to add it without all that. (might still have to charge a little more for the encoder though)

As a work around, if I use a different tool to encode the audio track to ac3, can VRD then use the track in lieu of the one in the video input file when building the output? How could sync be maintained doing so?

You would need to create Elementary Stream Audio and Video files then use
the "Elementary Stream Multiplexer" to mux the AC3 flle into the ES video file.

I've never had a sync problem with muxing files together.

Any update on including an AC3 encoder in an upcoming VRD version? V6? The 'next year' spoken about above was 2017. Sure would like to use VRD for all my video needs rather than needing to rely on different tools for different streams.
