Default settings, and UI tweaks

1.
- Hardware/Software Encoders

After performing tests with Windows, and Linux (Wine), on different systems, wonder if performance for others can be improved...
During installation, VRDInstallWizard, if only Software encoder (Higher quality) is detected, then Tools > Options > Hardware Encoders > Implementation setting should default to Software only, rather than Hardware (any device)?

This seems to not only improve encoding speed, it also accelerates the UI while accessing Profile Options.

2.
- Navigation

This question isn't intended to be controversial...
Options > Navigation > Mouse Wheel > Reverse Direction. Since default navigation direction seems reversed (wheel backward = video forward) compared with other software such as media players (wheel forward = video forward), should the default UI indicated state be flipped, appearing ticked by default, rather than unticked?

3.
- Options

Several screens appear to have a mix of text string line endings, some colons, others periods, and some blank.
Some descriptions are missing ellipsis. For example... Playback devices > Audio device > "Use default WAVE d" (using 125% display scale) or "Use default WAVE" (100% scale). Fixed in newer builds

4.
- Video Driver

Thoughts on changing default fallback from VMR9 to newly added GDI, more widely supported?

5.
- Help > Contents

Help section requires a little refresh, some settings described no longer exist, and/or newer features have been added
Images appear to be a range of XP, Windows 7, and TVSuite V4, with varying image formats, including older gif's.

Please know the above isn't picking faults, the intent is to help identify issues, and add extra polish.
Thank you in advance for your time, consideration, and feedback.

Edited to add 4, and 5, improve readability, and to highlight ideas implemented, solved/fixed.

The scaling issue falls into the same category as we discussed in the other thread. There is no option to add overflow ellipsis in MFC. I know some other UI frameworks like XAML offer that feature, but MFC does not, so there is no way for us to do that without writing custom controls for everything.

Thanks for your reply. For text strings which always exceed the allotted space, even at default scale values, maybe manually added ellipsis would look better?

In the above "Use default WAVE" example, there appears to be no reason for text being truncated, lots of blank space to the right, hard coded text box size?

There shouldn't be any default strings in English that overflow the controls. If there are let us know and we'll fix them. On occasion this will happen in a translation as the translated word is much longer than the space we allotted, but even that should be pretty rare. If you starts scaling then all bets are off.

From experiments, observed there is text missing in the string being discussed, default (100%) scale.

Playback devices > Audio device > "Use default WAVE"
Should read 'Use default WAVE driver:' or '...drivers:' ?

In TVSuite V4, there's another option to the right of the above mentioned string, which understandably limits the amount of space available and imposed a more strict text box size, that extra option was removed in V5 and V6 freeing up space (as seen above), but appears original text box size hasn't yet been expanded to reveal the full sting. Thanks.

You are correct that box was too short. I've fixed it for a future build

OK I see the confusion, but that's not the same thing. That is a QuickSync setting. It has the option to use the QS encoder in Software Only mode, but still using Intel encoder. The Software Only option in the installer means VideoReDo uses the x264 encoder instead. Kind of confusing I guess. The reason the speed changes when you set QS to Software Only is because each time you access the Profile settings dialog we do a quick check to see if your system is capable of using the hardware encoders and remove them from the options list if it can't. When QS is set to Software Only it returns true immediately without doing the hardware test.
