Commercial Skip

Has anyone had any luck with comskip?

I tried it out on an mpg capture I did, and here are my experiences:

Using the logo option seemed to cause it to end prematurely.

Even if comskip completed ok, it generated an empty [myvideo].txt file. The [myvideo].log file had the complete output duplicated from the command interface, but it still wasn't much good for any kind of 'final' list.

SageRedo.exe, even run without an input file gives me a missing 'mscoree.dll' error.

All in all, I'm not batting well with this one...

I had tried Comskip. It ran well without issue. However the points it created were not marked correctly. It did not accurately mark the commercial points. Sometimes it was off by several seconds. At other points, it missed the boat completely.

Sageredo ran without issue and converted it to a VPrj file.

SageReDo needs the .NET runtimes loaded. This is probably standard on XP SP1 or SP2, don't know about other OSs. Its certainly not part of Win98 unless you load them manually or with another program.

We are 1-2 weeks away from our first commercial skip beta. It is integrated directly into VideoReDo and will obviously have our full support.

ComSkip

Hi Folks ;-)

I made some interesting experiences with ComSkip. Let me tell about it.

First I used Version 0.41 as referenced here. The logo detection was very successful. However, after importing the result into videoredo, the cutmarks were all wrong. The reason was the factor between NTSC and PAL. The external program expected an NTSC factor between frame number and time. So my PAL video was treated wrong.

In version 0.5x and 0.6x (available in the forum) an option for outputting an VRD project file is included. Now the translation to PAL works. However. The logo detection algorithm seems to be changed between version 0.4x and 0.5x. As a result no logo is recognized at all. There are a number of new options to adjust the logo detection, but changing them does not help.

So, if one of the authors does read this thread:

Why has the successfull logo detectzion algorithm of version 0.4x been changed?

BTW, I am looking forward to having this feature built in in VRD. :)

Kind regards,

Uli

Uli, I don't think you'll find any of the authors here, but then you never know. You might want to see if the parameter file changed between version 0.4 and 0.5/0.6.

Work is proceeding nicely onj our efforts. First beta should be available in a week and will utilize black frame detection. Later betas will include logo detection and some other methods that are not part of COMSKIP at all.

Also our approach is somewhat different. I like to call it, "assisted commerical detection". We find the probable cut points, present them to you in an easy to use GUI, and you select which ones you want. Our goal is to be able to run it interactively or in a batch mode. So far in internal testing, it appears to be a real timesaver.

Hi Dan,

thank for the quick answer (as always...).

What you write sounds very interesting. So I will love to try the new features as soon as possible.

Assisted Detection - Very Very cool

Sounds really cool, Dan. The 'assisted detection' addresses one of my fears that if I just 'trust' the detection, it'll hack out part of my show.

Keep up the good work, but take your time!

Been doing some proof of concepts and so far it looks pretty darn good, but its not ready for public release even in beta mode. Too many little things that still need to tweaked. Probably another week or so before beta.

I'll wait until it comes out of alpha and goes into beta before getting into the specifics as many things may change. However, one set of features is pretty certain, it can be run in an interactive as well as a batch type mode.

Is it still just going to use black frame detection or have you added some other detection methods?

Other methods as well, but black frame appears to work very, very, very well. Remember, the key here is that its interactive. You don't have to scan the entire file looking for the perfect matches. You can position near a commercial block and say go. You can stop the scan, if you want at the end of the commercial block, scrub to the next block and then start scanning again. I have found this technique to be much faster than doing a complete scan, although that works as well.

Everything is very configurable as well, all parameters can be set via graphical and text dialogs, no manual editing of parameter files.

BTW, I am looking for some alpha testers to help out. First come first serve, 2 users each from multiple countries, so far there is one US and one from DE. Should be heavy VRD user, alpha will only work with registered copies, not trial keys. Please email or PM me.

Hi Dan

What stage is this at now? I'm really keen to try it. Did you get your full quota of testers? If not, I'm in UK and would be happy to lend a hand.

Cheers

Commercial editing

Any news on this front?

I was wondering on how to use the chapter.xml file from BTV. I know it is not the most accurate but I only want to know how to use an existing "cut" xml file in Videoredo to edit the cut scenes. :?:

I have been manually selecting the cut scenes and must say, Videoredo is well worth the money.:D Now I don't watch any of my recorded shows until after I remove the commercials.

I am also using the BTV showhandler (fighting with it, is more like it). but I like its ability to save the original show data for importing into an edited file for use in BTV. (If only I could get it to work automagically)

"edit 5 minutes later"
I found the info on this site about using the chapter file so as Rosanna Rosanna Danna would say "Never Mind".

I just did a google search on comskip and noticed a link to VideoRedo which I use to manually delete commercials and VRD makes this very simple. But as simple as it is anything that can help with this would be useful and I saw in this thread that VRD might soon have commercial detection to assist, etc with this process. Great!

Back in mid November it looked like things might be close to a beta and then a call for few beta helpers. Now that it is almost the end of December I was curious how things were going, any projection on availability, or if possible to still assist with betaing this capability?

I was contemplating trying comskip but if it is around the corner in VRD I think I would rather wait for it before trying comskip.
